Spread over a 122-acre plot in Wakdi village, off the Panvel- Matheran road, the Shantivan ashram has been treating and rehabilitating leprosy patients for 50 years.
Gandhiji was one of the first Indian leaders take the initiative to eradicate leprosy. The ashram was founded by two Gandhians, Annasaheb Dastane and Apasaheb Vedak, with the government granting them a 70-acre plot in Panvel taluka where the prevalence of leprosy was as high as 150 persons per 10,000. Thanks to the samiti’s work, the prevalence rate has come down to six per 10,000.
